Looking good Doug. Those Workmates sure get a lot of us, everyone must have at least one. Man I have had that workmate for probably 20 years Fred. And yes it has been used and abused and still it works great for lots of things. Something about that design that just works great. And it still folds up into a very small footprint. A portable workbench too. I hauled it outside and used it to hold the big platform pieces for the bed when I applied the poly finish. Definitely one of the best values I've ever gotten from a WW purchase.

Doug, Things are looking REAL good so far. Sorry I've missed all the BSing over the project Zac Thanks Zac, I guess us turners don't get down into the flatwork parts of the forum too much.

Its done! And delivered tonight. 4 coats of wipe on clear gloss Poly. The stain was a home brew from my son that he uses a lot in the houses he builds and matches what he has in his own home. No mattress for it just yet, but here are some pics of the finished product. The grandson seems to like it...even without a mattress... That is me in the background closing the closet door on the family skeletons What a ham my grandson is ;D It really tickles me that he likes his new bed so much. His "Paw" made it specially for him. Even without a mattress, my son and his son decide to test out the new bed.

Nice job Doug!!
Mattress...shmattress...I have a feeling the lil' guy would like a sheet of plywood on cinder blocks, if Paw made it.

Doug,
That turned out fantastic! You'll have to get a picture when the mattress and bedding are all made up.
Yep - you've got a ham of a grandson!
I like it - I like it a lot! How easy was the assembly once you got it to your son's house? Easy to set up/take down?

Thanks TJ, Fred, Dave and Zac! I appreciate the comments. Zac, it is real easy to put together and take apart. Basically, the side rails connect the headboard and footboard using this hardware www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=10Then, the platform portion is basically 2 torsion boxes that fit between the side rails. That's it - 6 individual pieces that go together and disassemble without using any tools at all. Very stable, very simple, and very heavy It could easily be assembled by one person in a few minutes, but only takes a few seconds for 2 people to do. Thanks again for all the comments guys. Now I'm back to turning a few things for the next craft show before I get back to working on the upper bunk bed.

An awesome build, Doug and a great looking bed. I really like that stain you used.
Since son and grandson both liked it, I'd say that a good time was had by all.
Thanks for letting us follow along with your work. It has been a great thread.

Thanks Cody, Boodrow, and Mike! I appreciate the comments. Cody, I did not like the stain at first, but the poly really made it pop and then it won me over. It kind of reminds me of chocolate. Boodrow, don't count those girls out just yet...they just might like woodworking...you never know Mike, it is nice to share with fellow woodworkers who can really appreciate the process.
