The last 2 pics are pretty simple , the first a square blank , the second a roughed out piece , the line in the center is somethin I like to do , I measure and find the center , put a pen on the tool rest and rotate by hand , it gives me a point to turn off of. Boodrow

OK Zac here is how I finish one , U can see I have a rag in the box towel which is thicker than a paper towel. I fold it a couple times to make it 4 ply. I then spray the shellac onto the towel with the lathe not runnin and give it a good coat , rotating by hand , I then re-spray the towel , turn the lathe on and give it a good coat. I do this a total of 3 times. Every coat u put on it melts into the previous coat , so I dont worry bout it bein a little ruff till after the last coat dries.

This is the stopper after mylands wax has been applied , and if I remeber im waitin on it to set up fore turnin the lathe on and wipin it off. The next 2 picks will be of the finished stopper , I did not epoxy the stud into it yet , I like to have several to do at one time fore I get that stinkin chit out. Burns my eyes too. One other thing I didnt post on this is that some kind of holdin device is a nessity when drillin the blanks , the first couple I tried to hold by hand , and it enlarged the hole because of the wobble my hand was not able to stop. I bought the drill press vise for 10 dollars at a garage sale , u can use any kinda holdin device , whether a wood clamp , pen makin device or what ever , but be sure it is somethin secure that u can hold on to while drillin. Any comments good , bad or a better way to do it is always welcome, This way has worked for me in makin over 500 stoppers , but im always welcome to change. I hope this has helped , and im always available for questions on how I do things . Boodrow

Boodrow - thanks a ton man!! I think I pretty much mirrored your method for finishing, except I'm using shellac out of a can because that's what I had on hand - well, and the choice of wax. Right now I'm using the carnauba wax that came with my Beall buffing system - but I plan to get some renaissance wax - that's supposed to be primo stuff and oughtta hold up as good as any wax I'd imagine.
Thanks for posting this man - I know it was a lot of work, but I really think it will help other turners, it was helpful to me. I didn't even think about marking a center line to work from.... kinda gives you more control of the shape of things early on, as opposed to just digging in and.... well adapting to what you've got working already.
Thanks again!
Zac

Mav and Zac thanks for postin a reply , I hope it helps anybody interested in turnin these and like Zac said about the center line , If one person walks away with more understandin or knowlege its worth the time. Mav I would have to say that wipe on poly would be the best of all u described , I only use it on the high end stoppers , because of dryin time. Dippin in laquer Ive never tried , so I cant say , All I can say is I tell folks not to put in a dish washer and Ive had no complaints about the finish , I see um at my daughters houses and they still look good. U will have to let me in on the laquer dipping , never tried it , but that stuff stanks somethin awful , when I used to paint cars many years ago I got a little overdose of the fumes and it kicked my arse. ;D Boodrow
