Wood supply poll

I am curious as to your wood buying habits. I usually buy just enough for the task at hand but my local supplier, the one closest to me, offers discounts for 100, 250, and 500 board feet lots. I really like the look and workability of Cherry (I'd use it a lot) and I might even look at something like hard maple in large quantities. Anything to save a buck for another tool purchase

I buy just enought for the current project ... I don't have the room for extra in my small shop.

Generally, just enough for the current project although I'll also jump on a good deal if one offers itself. Wood collecting can be more addictive than tool collecting. ;D

My dream is to have a nice wood storage area where I can stockpile wood for future, as yet unidentified projects.

I've sorta gotten here with turning wood but not for flat work.

I'm a bulk kinda' guy - when I go buy wood, I only have a very rough idea how much to get, and I nearly always see something I just wanna' HAVE for something later on. I've got probably 1500 pounds of dry turning blanks out in the barn right now, too. One of the true luxuries of owning a big barn.

I don't really buy wood for a project.

I do buy wood all the time - and I use what I have on hand for whatever I am working on.

I am always looking for wood on sale, wood being sold on Craigslist, or clearances.

If I can get 75 feet of Walnut for $100., I will just because I know I will use it.

I have gotten 200 feet of Cherry one time - and 100 feet of Oak one time.

I also tend to buy Cocobola boards one at a time - just for stock.

On hand - I have about 500-600 board feet, of various woods.

But, my buying habits are irratic.

Very rarely do I "buy" wood for a project.

I do store up wood, but I don't always buy in bulk.

So - the button I would click on wood be - I buy wood just for stock, then take as I need it. OR -- All of the above.

Did you use Internet Explorer, or one of its derivatives, or the FireFox plugin? That's pretty much the error I got from my unadorned Orca browser (built around a mix of IE & FireFox), but my Avant browser (built around only IE) was fine.

I tried the IE... it worked!

All that tells me is that the Forum software BUCKLES to use features that are not approved by the American Standards Assoc.; Microsoft IE... shoving their code down the world's throats!

I will not go to the IE just to Vote!

You don't have to go to IE! Hence my link to the plugin. I wanted to get away from FF myself and went to opera but it doesn't have the plugins available and it doesn't interface with google out of the box (I use google bookmarks). So I scrapped it and I'm tolerating FF. I have narrowed down 1 problem, yahoo mail makes it crash from time to time...don't know who to blame there.

Well, again, I'm not covered in the poll. Suffice to say, that what Cody said about wood collecting is true.

I'm something of an opportunistic wood buyer. If a deal shows up, or if I happen to see some wood that I want in addition to what I'm shopping for, I grab it. ;D

I haven't made much in the way of wood stuff yet.
But, I'm lucky that I have a craft wood yard close to me.
This guy sells all kinds of domestic & imported exotic wood.
If he doesn't have it, he can order how much of whatever kind of wood you want.
I've bought some super highly figured Cocobolo wood from him.
It's been 20+ years since I saw Cocobolo wood this nice.

That (the Yahoo mail thing) happens to me with Orca sometimes, too... and both Orca and Avant have a bad habit of getting lost in their own backtrace. IE's about the only browser I know of that doesn't get lost in its backtrace sometimes, except for my ancient (1.0.3) FireFox.

I got all of this for ONE DOLLAR PER BOARD FOOT!!
There's some 6/4 x 20" red oak in there.

My father used to talk about that - he worked at a sawmill in Indiana when he was a kid, said they sawed a lot of red oak. He kept shut about it nearly all my life, so I didn't even know about it till I was about 45. That sure ain't very expensive wood for YOU! If I'd bought red oak up HERE (where it doesn't grow much) for that kinda' money, I'd have a lot more money to spend right now... I bought a HUGE amount of it for that last house. Besides that giant kitchen & two bathrooms, I did every windowsill & all the windowframes & all the door & window casings in oak.

I buy in bulk, but then again, I drive 2 hours to get my wood at a good price most of the time. If I stayed local, I would probalby buy in smaller quantities.

I jump when i see deals usually. If i have a project coming soon and don't have the right kinda wood, i might buy it - only if i get a discount, and then i buy about 2x more than i need in case i goof.

It doesn't matter what Microsoft does or develops, ASA wouldn't approve it. ASA is, and always has been, Auntie MS.
