Chris, I have a couple of reasonable suppliers within 100 miles. I recently got some White Oak at $2.61 but I got 140 or so board feet. I saw other sellers with prices as much as $7.
I have commercial accounts at several places. (No, I'm not a business.) I set up the account to be COD, ALWAYS. And I always tell the business that I'm just a small shop that does mostly commissions. It's amazing how well these suppliers treat me. I get reasonably good prices but I buy in quantity AND the supplier knows that I'm not trying to pull a fast one or get something for free.

The polls do not work with Firefox either - at least not mine... And the option I need wasn't there. "Buy nowhere near enough for the project, and have to run back to get more wood at least three times"

"Buy nowhere near enough for the project, and have to run back to get more wood at least three times" I like that one! I have been there a few times Try the IE plugin, worked well for me. I got the errors until opening the page in IE mode.

Before I retired I would take advantage of any "business" trips to far East Texas and detour to Huntsville to visit M&G Sawmill, see what sort of surprises or special pricing Michael had on hand and just pick stuff that struck my fancy. Eventually a project would come along. We've also had a few social events there, and only on one trip did I have in mind a specific project. I've also picked up stuff locally off of Craigs List.

I often buy almost enough for the project at hand unless the price and wood are too good to pass up, then it will be all my full size pick-up can carry. Then again there are those all too occasional unplanned boards (or sequential stacks) that are too remarkable in price, figure, and color to allow someone else to make them into boot jacks... so I adopt them and give them a good home until a worthy project comes along.

I sometimes buy just enough for a project but when I get windfallen trees cheap or otherwise find cheap logs I may bring some 40 or 50 logs to the sawmill and stack all the timber in the backyard for future needs.

I recently picked up 300 bdft of red oak for $90. A friend at work bought the other half of the load for the same price. I don't really like giving up the storage space to buy in bulk, but there are tons of good deals around me right now. I need to increase the production rate of my shop so it doesn't sit so long.
Another friend bougth 1500 bdft of mixed wood at auction. He wants to sell some off, but I don't have room right now.
