I had 3 orders for yoyo's, 2 of which needed to be ready by tomorrow. I got them done, one of which just got delivered earlier this evening and no pic got taken - short notice. The one that did not get a pic taken was a Cocobolo yoyo and really looked nice. The other one is pictured here...Bubinga yoyo. And the obverse side...

I've liked the look of yoyo kits that I've scene, though - too much to work on for me right now! That is a real nice looking yoyo - I love Bubinga....good lookin' stuff in about anything.

Thanks Clay and Zac. They are a little finicky to make because if one side of the yoyo is not the same as the other they will wobble. I weigh each side to get them the same weight, and do my best to get the same shape on both sides. Zac, when you do get around to making a yoyo, I really like the CSUSA kit much, much better than any of the PSI kits. This is the one I like www.woodturnerscatalog.com/store/Projects___Toys___Ball_Bearing_Yo_Yo___ball_bearing_yo?Args=

I've been thinking of making a yoyo. Never even thought of the balance idea, and thanks for the heads up on the kits.

I'm new to this turning thing....but just a few questions.
Do all yoyo's come as two pieces?
Wouldn't it be better to use a solid piece for the 'weight thing'?
Do you need to stabilize/harden these?
Scott (gotta ask to know) B

As far as I know they always come in 2 pieces. You need an axle for the string to attach to and a metal axle with a bearing on it is far superior to a "wood" bearing if you used a single piece of wood.
Wouldn't it be better to use a solid piece for the 'weight thing'?
Not necessarily...you change the weight of the yoyo halves when you remove material from them - that includes diameter and thickness. Diameter and thickness are easy to duplicate and critical to getting the same weight. Harder to do is to get exactly the same shape so that they will still weigh the same. At least, for me it has been an issue. Seems like it would be simple, but...
Do you need to stabilize/harden these?
I have found that the best woods for making yoyos are the densest ones. I have used Cocobolo, Bubinga, Black and White Ebony, and Kingwood that had good feel to them. Maple, Hickory, and Cherry were OK too, but not quite as good. None of those woods need to be stabilized normally. Any wood that needs to be stabilized might not be a good choice to use because they would be much lighter.
