well since our freedom is under so much assault these days, I decided to do something about it. I built one of the psi flag pens. It is by far the most expensive one I have made. I was a little nervous about making it since I could have easily messed it up. One thing I did notice about the blue part is there was a couple of flaws in the wood, I filled it with ca but I can still see where it was. (small hole in wood) Overall I am pretty happy with the results. There are a few rookie mistakes that I made but I bet I won't make them on the next one I make. The finish is 6 coats of ca, micromeshed to 12k and polished with eee. This is the first time I used the foam backed micromesh.....Holy crap it makes a huge difference. anyway if you don't have em, buy em tonight. Well what do you guys think. I kinda like it. I will likely put this one up for sale in my first craft show this next year. but I am not sure how much I should sell it for. 100, 125, ?

Very COOL!! It's easy for me to say... How about $500 and come down 50% for Christmas!! I can see how the bottom section was made cutting a two slab piece with curves... then swap slab pieces... BUT, how were the stars done? That's a lot of inlay... Decals? ;D ;D What kind of dyes did you use? ... or was all in a kit? Very nice!!

It is a predyed kit from psi, I had to glue in the starts and white stripes. It took forever to get the starts fitted in the holes and glued in. here is the link if you want to check out. They also have a video you can watch to see how to build it. www.pennstateind.com/store/pen-inlay-kits.html

Joe - it's actually VERY clever how they make it. I saw the video last week (just pokin' around) and loved it. That is a B-E-A-UTIFUL pen!!
You know.... I'm not sure everyone would appreciate the time it took to make that pen..... I think it's worth $125....but.... would someone pay that much for it? I don't know.... I'd be half tempted to keep the pen for myself - and be sure to show it off..... you could have it at the craft shows as a "special order" type item and give them the price up front - that way you still have a sweet pen to carry 'round and don't have to eat the cost of the kit to keep a supply of them.
Just and indeer.... Nice work!!

I love it Mav! I have been tempted to try that kit out for quite a while, but the price has always kept me from pulling the trigger. It's nice to hear from someone who has actually made one. Thanks.
As far as price, I would be tempted to look at exactly the same way I do for my Rattlesnake cartridge pens. I love having a couple of them in my display as an attention getter, even though I know not many are going to sell for the price I need to get for them. But, I tend to look at it as a method of advertising. When I happen to sell one, it is a nice bonus.
I am seriously thinking about doing the same thing with one of those flag pen kits. I really believe that you need to have just a few very expensive pens in your display at all times.

thanks for the nice comments, doug my thoughts are exactly what you said. I think the wow factor is high and even though they may not buy that one they will considering buying a lesser price pen due to the quality of pens you offer. I am hoping to sell a bunch of these next year since it is a mid year election and some people may actually be willing to buy one.

Very nice job... I see these kits being made quite a bit... they do one heck of a job on those kits, and you did it justice for sure.
