Hey guys - so I turned two cartridge pens today and assembled them. I'm glad I had watched that video on the PSI website - I found that watching it a couple times (even several days or a week ago) was very helpful. Both are chrome kits, the gold were out of stock - the first is buffalo horn, and the second is deer antler. The buffalo horn came round so that was awesome, but it was much harder than the deer antler - the deer antler turned just fine when it was rounded, but it took some patience rounding it. I am very happy with the buffalo horn, I sanded through the mico mesh grades and then finished with HUT Crystal Coat and the Beall buffing system - this is my favorite. The deer antler - I just sanded through 600 - crystal coat - beall buffing system. This one, I KNOW, is too fat - it should have been turned down some more..... next one I'll get right! I don't even care for how fat it is.... I knew I should have turned it down more... but - we turn and we learn Thanks for peekin'! Zac

You're doing great.... there are a lot of penturners who never seem to try anything new... you sure aren't going to be one of them! Yea... that is a chubby pen alright... Now personally *I* have never turned a fat pen..... (I think I still have that one somewhere.... need to find it and throw it away... )

I love these pen kits. Was going to order the gold ones last week but they were out. Now that they are in stock I may have to order more. did psi antler come prerounded or did you just get a few tines and have to cut em up and drill them out yourself. I have a lot of deer antlers but it is a pain in the butt to cut them up since it seems like the piece is never straight enough to use. I end up getting a lot of the center marrow pieces, which turn grey when you sand. I have yet to turn one as white as yours or dougs. I wonder if it is easier to get through psi rather than cut up my own. I think they look a lot better solid white vs some white and some greyish color.

Thanks guys! Yeah - Marc, I'm not going to be one who sits on his haunches turning the same things.... I am already thinking about things I can laminate to make bottle stoppers.... I won't spoil the surprises though - we'll wait to see if they turn out! Ha - that ain't not stinkin' fat pen you've got there!!

Zac, I think the cartridge pens are a kit that look best with a pretty straight upper barrel - just my preference.
I really like those kits too. I get the most interest in the antler ones I have done...in fact I only have 2 left now. The ones I made with wood upper barrels don't seem to get as much attention.
Keep 'em coming!
