There is either a 16" or 18" RAS at work I have used a couple times. They just use it to make pallets and crates. It makes you think twice before you turn it on.

You can rip 6 inch lumber ...with this saw. That's just nuts. I tried ripping wood with my RAS before I got my tablesaw. That was scary. I was in fear for my life. I'll never do that again.

I was ripping with one and had the guard set just to clear the board. Somehow the board tilted and the blade caught the guard and threw it through the glass on a door and about 20' out in the yard. About as exciting as peeing on a hot stove.

WOW - that would be awesome.
Ripping on the RAS??
Done Tons of ripping on mine. Proper setup is a MUST, but the RAS will rip almost as well as the TS.
I have ripped full sheets of plywood on my RAS. many times.
I used a 16" RAS at school one time, YES it certainly IS intimidating at first.
