and he asks you out of respect, "I want to build a small garage shop so I can build furniture and work on cool projects, what tools should I start off with? What brands and what tools?

Dale you are up early. I'm not very brand loyal. One would need a good table saw with a good miter gauge, a workbench of some type and a lot of stuff like clamps, hammers, measuring and squaring tool, chisels,. I think for that money they should be able to get a planer and jointer. Everyone works differently so my advice is get what they need and get the best that fits their budget. I've made some good decisions and then there are some that weren't really great.

Get a Brand New Sawstop cabinet saw... ... get a Forrest WWII for it...
... then, hunt & peck on eBay, etc. for the other stuff! ;D ;D

Get a Brand New Sawstop cabinet saw... ... get a Forrest WWII for it... ... then, hunt & peck on eBay, etc. for the other stuff! ;D ;D x2. i would buy a sawstop ICS and start saving pennies for other tools If I started over, I would probably at least get the sawstop PCS and focus then on Grizzly. I have a jointer (490x) and for the money it's a great tool. If I didn't have a delta lunchbox planer I would be looking for a 15" floor model from Grizz. Drill press and bandsaw are already on my wishlist. Other than TS I would go mostly green and that is not to say anything negative about their table saws, you could almost go all green if you did your research on their better models of each tool category.
