without the mirror! Wood is Mahogany . Lot's of additions could go to this style: engraved mission patterns on mirror, stained or opaque glass in the slots around the mirror, etc. I will never use dowels again when I can T&M. I just couldn't get the joints tight enough with the dowels whereas the tenon and mortise are almost a guarantee joint. It was a light mahogany and I used red mahogany stain and laquer. dale

The frame elements appear to be perfectly coplanar on the front face, that isn't so easy with dowel joints. I don't see the rounding associated with a extensive face sanding so I'm guessing you nailed the locations of the dowels.
Accept the victories you earn Dale.

I sanded up to 320 grit and no nails if that is what you meant. The dowels were pretty much dead on in case that is what you meant, or no nails used if that is what you meant. It is pretty and acceptable. I appreciate the feedback. Thanks

Yes, I was commenting on the apparent precision of the dowel placement, not implying that you "shot a few brads to hold it together until the glue dried."

Very nice Dale. Stained glass would look good around the outside of the frame. bmorto

That is an awesome looking mirror!
I've never tried dowels - they seem like they'd be a headache, but I guess that used to be the "fast" alternative to M&T every joint.... How about lap joints? Something like this could utilize lap joints and still look really nice.
The stain and finish came out really well too - I'm not a huge fan of staining, myself, but this piece came out really nice - hard to tell that it's stained really - looks natural.

Thanks Zac, Joe, and others. I love staining and finishing. It literally is my favorite part of any project because to me it transforms and wood project into a piece of art. We used to have a store out here called unfinished furniture and I just can't get that one out of my head because to me they seemed unfinished, pun intended. I have never tried pocket screws, I think I have a mental block against them.

... I have never tried pocket screws, I think I have a mental block against them. dale I was the same way until I saw a few videos demonstrating the use of them... It was awesome the way they were putting stuff together... FAST... Cut everything to size... drill pocket screw holes... clamp to mating piece & table and screw... DONE...

updated picture of mirror frame with Gray Mirror set. Gray mirror is very very cool, almost like a black tint to it as if the lighting around you was dusk.
