I made this box as a birthday gift, it turned out nice, with three knots showing. The wood is Red Cedar, the finish is rattlecan clearcoat, which works quite a lot better than I'd expected. Attachments:

I would never shy away from knots on something like that.

Looks really good - cedar has wonderful color. I've had good luck with Krylon products - I'm not a huge fan of spray on clear coats - but as far as they go - Krylons is good.

The spray one works well for me, as long as I remember that I'm not spraypainting a barn door or something. It took me one full can to get the hang of it, and to learn that 12 thin coats trump three thick ones.

Well put!!! I remember when I realized that..... the best spray painting and clear coating is done with multiple, but very LIGHT coats......mist it on - don't paint it with aerosol....that is what a brush is for!

I really like to turn cedar been doing up some pens with that wood really like your piece and it turns so nice.
