I have an old Craftsman 10" table saw. (Model # 113.298032 if that makes any difference.) When I crank the blade up to full height, I have to loosen the motor swivel bolt to loosen it up & allow the belt to turn & let the blade go to full height. I tried to crank the blade up without loosening the motor, but it won't go up fully. Is this common for this saw? Maybe a design flaw? Or do most belt drive saws require loosening up the belt to allow for full blade extension?

Hmmm... typically, the motor is free to swivel on belt-drive saws, so it can follow the arbor up & down. Can you put a nylock nut on that bolt so you don't have to loosen it each time?

Could be a design flaw, but I would think not. Did you make sure none of the brackets or mounts weren't cracked or broken? This may have an effect. I have never heard of this. Maybe someone familiar with the saw can pipe up and give you better advice.

I have a 113.298842 if that matters. If yours is the same as mine, the belt is held tight by the weight of the motor. While raising tha blade, the arbor goes up & the motor goes up & forward so to speak(I don't understand the "belt turning). There's a slot in the bracket that a "shoulder bolt" goes through to allow this to happen. I wonder if someone replaced the shoulder bolt with a regular one? Either way, I can raise the motor by hand (ie. to change the belt) without loosening anything. HTH Could you post some pics, or maybe I could, to see if we have the same setup?

My first thought is that someone has put a belt on it that is to short.

My first thought is that someone has put a belt on it that is to short. No chance. it still had the 23 year old original belt on it. I got a new one from Sears.
