My planer is a Rigid and I have run some 4" long pieces through it using a 24" carrier with a 1/4" backing strip attached to keep it from kicking back out.

The Ridgid manual says 12" but I can tell you that a somewhat shorter piece will go through, at least it did for me. But double sided tape and a longer piece works ... up to a point. Which point I ain't found out yet I've also heard of guys sandwiches a short piece between 2 longer pieces clamped together in one fashion or another. Think of it kinda like being a "H" shape where the short piece is in the middle. Never tried it, but it seems like a workable way to do it if you can figure a good way to clamp the 3 pieces together. Dang, I just thought of something...just put a spacer piece in front and back of your middle piece and that should work pretty well. If you try something like that,,,we will need to see pictures.
