I wonder how many of yall have an air filtrater in ur shop? Ive had a lot of sinus infections over the last couple years , dont know if its the dust in my shop or what. Woodcraft sent me an email on some specials they were running. I bought a jet afs400 for 179, with free shippin and another 10 dollars knocked off the sale price. I have a red neck dust collector system that seems to work pretty good , but still dust has settled on every inch of my shop. I thought I would do the lungs a favor and get one. Boodrow

I got one from Grizzly for $175 or so and it works well in my small 260 sq foot shop.

A room air filtration system alone is not really gonna be of great benefit to your sinuses or lungs. Determine how many cubic feet of space are in your shop. Then find out how much air the system moves per hour. Even if it moved all of the air in your shop through every hour, there would still always be dust in the air as long as you're generating it with machinery. You need to either collect all of the dust at the source with a DC system, or wear a mask to filter the air you're breathing.
Where a room air filtration system might be useful is to filter the air when you're not generating more dust in preparation for using the room to apply a finish.

Boodrow, I agree with what Jerry said.
You ought to think seriously about getting one of those Harbor Freight 2 hp dust collectors. You sure don't want to be forced out of woodworking because of a reaction to the dust, ala Dick.

For me, I'm doing these two things.
1st and most important - I get a really good dust collector ( I bought it used from Dick). I'm still setting it up and currently have it working on my tablesaw. Others will be connected soon as I get round tuit.
2nd air cleaner - I'm modifying a squirrel cage blower so I can put some HEPA filter on it and clean the air. The squirrel cage move a lot of air and with those high efficiency 3M filter, I get the air cleaned out in no time at all. It doesn't cost me that much either.

I built my air scrubber. It has a 3 speed motor w/ squirrel cage, 2 filters on the intake, and 1 on the exhaust. When the front one gets dirty, I move the other 2 front and put a new one in the rear. I figured it cleans the air 2-3x an hr. I also run a 1200 cfm dust collector w/ 4" pvc main line. Blast gates at the tools, and it runs with my tools. Then my ROS and sheet sanders get hooked to my shop vac. Sanding puts the most dust in the air, so try to stop as much as ya can. Downdraft table would be really nice (gonna build on for the new shop).

I completely understand suffering through sinus infections. I have trouble with them myself. The single best thing for dust is to get rid of the dusty air and replace it with clean air as fast as possible. Running a large shop fan to exhaust the dust is the best if your situation with neighbors allows it. Stand in the incoming air stream when making lots of dust. This is we do at work most of the year. The problem comes when it gets cold enough to need to keep the warm air in the shop. I built an air scrubber last year and it helps, but it doesn't keep the dust out of your lungs. I wear a dust mask when I'm making dust. The air scrubber allows me to take off my mask sooner after I stop making dust. The dust situation will is the biggest factor that makes me want to work out of my own shop. I'm installing a 2hp grizzly cyclone and ducting in my home shop. Even so I will probably still wear a dust mask when I'm making lots of dust. These are the dust masks I like: www.envirosafetyproducts.com/product/Wilson-SAF-T-FIT-PlUS-N1125-AG-Respirator.htmlThe exhalation valve and the nose seal make them the only masks I've found that don't fog my safety glasses.

Boodrow, I built a downdraft table to kind of serve two purposes. One is to use as an air filtration/dust collector/sanding station. The other is to use as an assembly table/workbench. In the two weeks I was off before getting called out again I did some experimenting with it using my SCMS and it seems to work pretty good. The thing I wanted to call your attention to was the post by Cody about the HF DC. If you can find the November issue of Wood magazine there is a coupon on page 77 for the 2 hp DC Cody mentions. The DC is reguarlly 249.00 and the coupon gets it for 138.00 I believe. I bought one the day before I got called out so it is still sitting in the box in the floor of my shop so I haven't had a chance to play with it yet.
