Here's a project I did a few years ago that I'm kinda proud of. It's hickory, stained with red mahogany stain. The homeowner showed me a picture of something that she was after, and this is what i came up with. It's not quite complete in this pic. Tile had to go on the hearth still, and I had to trim that part out. I think the mirror ended up way too high, but that's what she wanted. It was my first time to work with hickory. That stuff is HARD! I did her kitchen and two bathrooms, too. Same hickory, same stain. Attachments:

That is really nice. What kind of fasteners/joinery did you use?
Hickory wood is somethin' else, aint it? I got some for turning, and I thought dried Red Oak was hard until I started hollowing a Hickory form!

That is a good looking piece of work. Those curved frame and panels took some doing. Definitely something to be proud of.

Not every homeowner possess a good sense of proportion.

TJ, it's all frame and panel construction, nothing special. And I shot screws in it here and there, where they'd be hidden. There's nothing hand carved ('cept maybe a couple of the outside miters that I had to whittle on with my pocket knife ) The bottom of the mirror was about five feet off the floor. Yep' way too high.

That's some nice work...the curved panels, the tile hearth and the stain really makes that Hickory lood good. I may have to try that myself.

Wow! That is a great job. Love that "keystone" in the top center above the fireplace. Nice touch. Hickory/pecan is one of my favorite woods to work with. It is hard and brittle and wants really sharp tools, but it often has very nice figure and I can get it pretty cheap around these parts. I've not tried staining any, but after seeing yours, I may give that a shot one day.

Please don't report me... OK? Report received, administrative action pending approval from the managerial department of the Federation of The Woodworld. Wouldn't wanna be you when the punishment comes down from the top. You'll be stretched across a table saw and bull whipped till your blood soaks your socks. Then, they're gonna stuff lathe tools up under your fingernails. Then they're gonna tie you to a mule and drag you across a 500' wide stack of rough lumber. And then they're gonna hurt ya!
