My sister in law(SIL) and her husband had a fishing camp on stilts at the river. They got wiped out with a Hurricane a few years ago and rebuilt a nice weekend place on pilings, her decorating scheme was "lighthouse's" and she was buying pictures and small statues of lighthouses and had them settin around.I got a wild hair one day to build her a light house.I turned the main structure on my lathe in 5 pieces and glued them together. The glass at the top is part of a hummingbird feeder.I even turned the little gold handrail at the top,I think I broke two or three before I got one.I made the windows door and entry house and added the aluminum window frames with a silver paint pencil, had to do a little carving on the entry. The lighthouse light has 6 LED's that are wired to a couple of batteries,it doesn't rotate but has you walk past they seem to dim because they are at their brightest when you are looking directly at them, then as you approach the next it gets brighter and brighter until you are directly in front of it,giving the effect that it is rotating.
The rocky shore line was made from driven nails thru a piece of plywood leaving different lengths exposed, then covered in window screen epoxied to the nails.I then covered the screen with celulose mixture I got at Hobby Lobby and let it dry waiting for paint. The water and waves are buttered on spackling compound. The dock and boat are made from popsickle sticks, the pilings at the dock are 1/8"dowels,the boat tie line is a piece of braided fishing line. The drift wood is twigs from and oak tree in my yard.Note the steps in the rocks from the dock to the lighthouse path, shaped into the wet celulose. You can't see them but there are two little black handcarved oars in the boat
I then got out the tape and aerosol paint and gave it a finish. The last step was to add real sand to the seashore,I sprinkled it in a bed of glue until no more would stick.
I presented it to her and she cried...
Fun project. 29 inches high and 24 inchs wide.
