...............in the scrap pile have a place in turning too. Is anyone considering some segmented turning endeavors ? The long cold winter nights are about to set in so there is no excuse to not to play with those little odd shaped blocks. I think I have only done 7 or 8 different items but its a lot of fun and you can be as creative as you desire. Heres a pic of a bowl I did ,Gladys has used it as a fruit bowl for the last several years so the glue joints do hold up well. This bowl is 11" in diameter and 3" high,it has 121 pieces including the base. It is made up of Wengi,Walnut,Maple and Mahogany. I will write a short tutorial on how to if anyone would like or you can look it up on the internet. dick

Boodrow,I don't have the 1st pic, it would have to be a written procedure,if you want to take a run at it holler.
The best thing to do is do a Google Search for Segmented Turning.there are many photos and videos or books available.
It would be very hard to explain it without pics.
Basically one needs to cut a number of segments that will make up a ring when glued together this ring would need to be perfectly flat on one side, rings would get progressively larger when making a bowl and the thickness and number of rings will determine the depth of the bowl you need to glue rings one after another to a base letting the glue dry between levels then turn that level flat and glue the next ring on so on and so forth until you have all rings glued in place. Some folks rough turn each ring after it drys and before the next ring is glued in place.
Position and placement of rings is critical to keep symetry of the pieces.
Hand sketches of the profile need to be made to determine length and thickness of the segments or you can buy software that will do it for you..............the number of segments in the ring determines the angle of the end cuts of the segment.
It will take a little thought but is doable.

When you get ready to do one, go to the big box and get a bunch of the large worm gear clamps like these: You can get them in larger sizes of 4 1/2" diameter and up. Likely find them in plumbing or HVAC areas. They can connected together end to end to make larger clamps. They are great for gluing up the rings of segments.
