So.... I had blanks cut and drilled/glued for three pens. Birdseye maple - Honduras Rosewood, and Bolivian Rosewood.
I was turning my merry little way.... - got both Bolivian Rosewood blanks turned and finished - both Birdseye Maple blanks turned and finished..... got the first Honduras Rosewood blank turned and finished, and on the last friggin' blank - crack..... it tore apart while turning. Chit.... well.... the other day I was turning a pen from Honduras rose wood and split half the blank - but kept the other half.... so I started to turn that one even though they wouldn't match 100%...... crack - I split that one too!!
So... for the mathematicians here.... that is THREE blanks of Honduras Rosewood cracked on the lathe.
Hmm.... so - I started to investigate (and yes, the gouge was sharp the whole time, and I was going slow - they all happened when the blank was turned down quite a ways) I realized that there is a fair amount of the brass tube that was dry - didn't have any CA glue on it. So... I'm thinking that is my problem. I was putting it on, thought I was covering everything, but trying not to have too much excess.... next time I'm just going to make sure the whole blank is covered - all the excess turns off anyways.
So...yeah - that sucked - but two pens to put together right?
Well.... I started to assemble the Bolivian Rosewood pen - what do you know? I shove the twist mechanism too far in - pen won't work.... chit chit chit - F-it.... I pull the tip off and will use the kit another time. That pen junked..... So... I started the Birdseye Maple pen...which IMO looked pretty snazzy.... what do you know - I shove the damn twist mechanism in too far again.... holy moley I can't believe it. I'm almost embarrassed to admit all of this.....
The thing is..... I wasn't even really rushing around much..... *sigh* sometimes we have those days huh? I'm done in the shop for today - unless I drill a couple of blanks for later in the week.
