A few years back the folks on the other forum including myself got into a habit of scavenging lumber from dumpsters and shipping pallets. Its fun to do this if you have the patience to pull all the nails ,plane and shape.
Heres a coffee table I made from some of that lumber.I did buy the 3/4" oak ply for the top and the molding which I dyed. The rest is pallet pieces, make of wood unknown, someone said they thought the legs were Persimmon I don't know for sure but if you rap it with a plastic chisel handle it sings back at you,it is harder than hell. The legs were from the pallet runners which were about 4 x 4. I did a little bit of lathe work and thickness planing on the legs, some router work and mortice & tenon joinery. The top was supposed to get a 1/4 " glass insert but it never happened .My daughter still is using it.
The computer desk I made for my grandson when he was 15 or 16 he is now off at college at 23 and still using it,once again pallet lumber tho I did buy the 1/4" oak ply modesty panels. It to had some router work and mortice & tenon joinery. The end panels are floating Lap & Gap construction in a grooved face frame.I can't remember if I made the slats rabbit edge's with a saw cut or a router. The top was made up from many pieces of random lengths of 1 1/2 x 3 material cut from pallet runners and glued together, planed by hand and final dimension cut with a panel cutter skid on the table saw.I may have bought the edge banding I can't remember or I may have had it in my scrap pile.
The total cost for these two pieces of furniture probably wasn't over $25 or $30............
I just remembered Limey told me how to make the dye with rusty nails and vinegar I think,,,,,,it didnt work it was kinda pink looking.I think we attributed that to some galvanized nails in the bunch.LOL I ended up spray painting it.
