I finished another box today...these things are as addictive as turning and a great way to explore design. If it doesn't turn out well, then there's not a lot of time or material invested. This one is Bois d'Arc with an ebonized Maple top and feet. The bottom is Aromatic Cedar. The miter keys and lift are true Ebony. I attached the lift with short pieces of brass rod CA glued in place. This box is 11 1/4" x 7 1/2" x 4 3/4" tall. The box sides are 5/8" thick.

SO THATS WHAT BOIS DE ARC LOOKS LIKE. THE FEET ARE COOL DID YOU DO THEM BY HAND OR A ROUTER

SO THATS WHAT BOIS DE ARC LOOKS LIKE. THE FEET ARE COOL DID YOU DO THEM BY HAND OR A ROUTER The cove on the feet was done at the router table with a 1/2" round-nose bit. I made a pattern for the bracket foot out of 1/4" mdf. I'd miter an end of the coved stock, mark the back side for the bracket foot and cut it out on the band saw...rinse and repeat until eight pieces were done. After that, it was just a matter of sanding out the saw marks and gluing the miters together.

I ebonized the Maple with my favorite method...liquid black shoe polish. There should be an open pic there now. I somehow selected the same pic twice on the first try.

There isn't any wax mixed into it? ... or maybe you don't care? Sounds good... better than the India Ink method, I think... (?)

Wow. That is beautiful. Those feet are great. Here I am going along making a small box here and there, thinking I am doing well and you start pumping out boxes that just blow me away! I am very impressed with you skills. Thanks for doing these.

That's a real eye catcher Cody. Is that the natural color of the Bois d'Arc or is it oil enhanced? I can't quite nail down why this looks oriental to me.
I concur, practice boxes that don't make the grade can become a fancy router bit box or a plane iron storage box, etc..

This box is speaking to me. I love the contemporary styling combined with the knotty wood. Not something you usually see. The contrast is awesome. Great work.

What, no wood hinges on this one. ;D
Yeah, boxes can get addictive and they make great gifts. So shoe black on the maple to ebonize it. Cool!

Did you just slice that up or have you been storing it in a lightless area, it looks fresh cut,,,,,,,,,,,,you probably know this but rotate its position in respect to the light for an even darkening of the wood but then again different tones would look nice too.

Thanks for all the comments, guys. I'm rather proud of hos this box turned out, too.
Dick, the wood wasn't fresh cut but was freshly planed to the 5/8" thickness. That's why it's so bright.
Now for some advice....
I already have a customer wanting to buy the box for a Christmas gift. I haven't quoted a price yet but I was thinking about asking $125 for it.
Any comments about the price...too high?...too low?

Cody I would go for the 125, tis a one of kind piece. If he haggles maybe come down to 110 , I wouldnt go any less. I hope I get to see fore u sell it. Im still upset I didnt get to come over sat for some biscuits and gravy. I know miss karen is a good cook. Hopefully we can do it when u rotate in! Boodrow

I sold the box for $125. The customer is happy with the price and I'm happy with the price. Life is good.
