This marks my second foray into box making and it's harder than it would seem. But it's fun, too, almost as much fun as turning. This box is primarily Walnut with a spalted Elm top, lift and hinges. The bottom is Cedar. It's 9" wide, 5 1/2" deep and 4" high with 1/2" wall thickness. Finish is Minwax W.O. poly and I'll probably put a couple more coats on for a gloss shine before I'm through. The coat of finish on it now is still a bit tacky buyt I wanted to post the pic before I leave for offshore. I made it from scraps left over from the Walnut rocker I made recently and a board of spalted Elm that I milled on my band saw a couple years ago. It's a great way to use up those small pieces of wood we all hoard.

Fantastic! I love those wood hinges too! I think you made a binder using wood hinges for someone one time too. Very cool!

Nice box, Mr C. I'd like to hear a little bit more about those hinges. Floyd, I took a 3/8" thick x 8" wide piece of Elm and rounded over the ends with a 3/16 roundover bit. Next, I cut 3/8" box joints 3/8" deep into the rounded over end grain. After that, it was back to the router table to rout away 1/2 of the stock thickness, 3/8" from the rounded over ends. That left me with a knuckle that was round on one side and square on the other (because I didn't have a bullnose bit). So, I filed and sanded the square side round and then cut out segments for the hinges...three knuckles on one side, two on the other. After that, I put the knuckle end of the hinges in my Incra Hingemaster jig and drilled a 1/8" thru hole for the brass rod hinge pin. Hope that makes sense. Last night I ordered 3/8" and 1/2" Whitesides bullnose bits. The hinges will be easier next time. Having to offset the knuckles so that the hinge sides will close fully is what made it difficult without the bullnbose bits. After routing the end of the stock with it flat, it is then stood on it's end and another pass made. That rounds it 3/4 of the way around and it's a piece of cake then. ;D

Thanks for the explanation of the hinges Cody. I hadn't thought of cutting a hinge as a box joint, once they're explained the mysteries become obvious.

Awesome! I think the spalted elm top is a perfect fit with the walnut.
