im not sure what type of wood this is. if someone could identify it for me. than i wouldn't be as dumb.

Hard to tell from just a picture, the board laying flat sorta looks like maple, but the other looks like pecan to me. Tell us about the wood. Is it real hard, brittle, splintery . . .

Could be a whole lot of things - from here it looks a lot like freshly-planed cherry, too.
Any more clues?

Might even be Osage orange, judging by the color alone.

im in kentucky and im sure it was cut and milled here. cherry sounds good to me so far. its better than fire wood altough it does start a good fire. unless someone else has a better idea. ill just call it cherry and build something. thanks

It just seems to red for most maple I have seen,,,I think there is a Red Maple isn't there and is it red grained?

I think it is cherry freshly planned, looks like the edge is still dark. Fred

it was a redish color before it was planned. ive heard red maple before but, ive never seen it. i dont know what else i could tell ya about it that would help.
but, thanks for the input. at least i know its wood

Ok... now. What does it SMELL like - when it's freshly machined, when a little bit is burnt? Cherry smells a little tangy when it's machined & acrid when burned. Maple smells... kinda'... mapley when it's machined & sweetish when it's burned.

lexrex showed me pics of soft maple and they look the same. wife even agreed they looked the same. it doesnt look like my cherry i got here. as for the smell when i planned it i couldnt tell. all the other wood i have i know what there are. thank again
