I think I might be the first one to post something that was made from an item that came from the mystery box. This was an Afzelia pen blank that came from Leo. Classic roller ball pen kit from PSI. First time for me to use this wood and I like it! Thanks Leo!

I've never even heard of the wood, but I could imagine being very drawn to it as a regular material. Love the look of it, almost like a red version of walnut. I don't know why I'm getting the walnut vibe, but I do. Still love that kit. Dressy, but not showy.

TJ, it is an open grained wood like Walnut and you are right that it is pretty close to being a redish version. I had not thought of it in terms of Walnut, but now that you said that, it really is similar to Walnut. Including the need to clean out the open grain before applying the CA finish. It gets that sanding dust trapped in the grain and needs to be cleaned out.

I too got a piece of this stuff from the Swap Box! Have used the Burl version of it for one of MIL gift pens that are now in Minnesota. Was wanting to see what the striaghter grain stuff would like like....and you beat me to it!
Great wood that color hardware on the kit. Gonna need to get a bunch on them for my table know....you pretty much showed that any wood should look okay on it!

Yeah guys, the wood was better than I thought it might be, and really turned out nicely. Not like the burl version I have seen but not too shabby. Definitely worth taking the time to make a pen with.

That's a great looking pen, Doug and I like the PSI kit, too.
Afzelia is also called Doussie and was one of Jim Krenov's favorite woods. He wrote that it worked very well with hand tools, has the interesting end-grain and mellows to a look not unlike Mahogany. He mad a lot of pieces using Doussie (Afzelia).
