Yesterday I attended the funeral of the father of a lifelong friend. We were fence neighbors growing up and I loved and respected his dad as much as any person on earth.
The deceased was a decorated WWII veteran and the friend has given me permission to build a memorial flag case for him. I want to include not only the flag but his medals and a $1.00 bill on which he had written the names of all the countries he was in during the war.
I've been online and saved pics of a couple of flag cases that I liked. What I want to know is has anyone here built one or have plans for one? I want it to be something really special so if you have or know of plans, I'd appreciate the info.

I seem to remember Jerry building a few a while back. Maybe he'll chime in.

Here's one I built a few years ago (for a deceased military man). I don't remember the details, but I do know she couldn't find one the right size for the flag. She brought the flag to me, and I just went from that. She wanted the bottom part to have a black felt back to attach medals, and tall enough for the angel. This one may not be special enough, but here it is. (The flash made the stripes show through, you can't see 'em in the real world) Here's my 22½° jig...fwiw

I remember building one similar to what you are describing some time back. It was in my pre-sketchup days, so I didn't do any plans, just played it by ear as I went along. The overall shape was rectangular with a diagonal piece across one corner to hold the flag. The remainder was open for medals etc. I could probably draw up a quick plan in SketchUp if you give me the dimensions of the folded flag and over all size you want it to be.

Cody,
I saw one I liked and will get around to building some day, I think it would be good with your hand tool skills. It is a rectangular box which surrounds the triangular box holding the flag. The base of the rectangle is the length of the long side of the triangle. You can make it bigger but either way it gives you good display space for medals, pictures, the dollar bill. It also gives you a chance to show off your dovetails. Sorry for no pic or plans.

Cody i would do an oval with the flag in the middle and the honors out to the sides. Good luck

Cody, give this a look. www.tjfritts.com/Display.skpIt's a design I whipped together in SU from dimensions I found on flagguys.com and using ideas from a couple three cases. BTW, I do not know why SU keeps locking it to be read only, but that's the only way I can get my site to upload it. The bill holder is a wee undersized of what it should be; I failed to take the spacing around the bill into account. Also, you might think of incorporating an engraved plate between the bill holder and the flag portion entailing his years, name, branch, rank, etc. And, you'd put glass over the front of it. Like I said, I just whipped it together. TJ.

Thanks a bunch guys. Y'all really came through with some great designs. I'll get with my friend when I get home, measure the flag and then we will decide on which design. It will likely include several of the features I saw here.
John, I like the idea of hand cut dovetails on the surround. That would add a little "wow" factor to it without being gaudy or over-embellished.
Thanks again for the links and suggestions, everybody.
