Still trying to get everything that I want to have for the craft show. Made 5 pens yesterday and today. First is an Antler Gatsby. This one has the deepest "bark" that I've ever gotten and I'm liking it pretty well. All the Antler Gatsby kits I've made before I wanted mostly the Ivory look for. This one is different. Next are a couple of Pine Cone Gatsby kits. I've never use the Pine cones on a Gatsby before because they have to be turned so thin, but Les did one so I had to give it a try One of them did blow out a little piece that I had to patch, but overall they were OK to turn. And last are a pair of Ebony and Bloodwood cartridge pens.

Those are sweet.I have a lathe but i dont really know how to use it other than make chit round I don't know about everybody else, but that's the way I started. Just mount up a piece of wood, set the lathe to a slow speed until the piece is in the round, and keep your eyes on your job. No roughing gouges or skews on faceplate turnings. (Ok, I confess, I've used a skew very carefully on faceplate turnings, but only scraper style to knock down ridges and rough spots, but don't tell anybody.) Nice pens, I like the look of that cone pen on the left!

Great pens, Doug but that Antler Gatsby followed closely by the R/H Pine Cone pen are spectacular.

Those are sweet.I have a lathe but i dont really know how to use it other than make chit round I agree with TJ...that is how we all started out. I would grab a piece of wood out of the firewood pile and turn it, not even having anything in mind to make out of it at first and just see what turned out It was fun, but pretty soon I was trying to think of things to make that were actually useful. Pens are where I ended up, and later on to bottle stoppers. Youtube videos are available to give you some great ideas too...things like turned bird houses, yoyos, Christmas Ornaments, bowls etc. There are so many neat things to make using the lathe.

Doug....you even think about do some Vietnam pens(the ribbon the soldiers got from being there). Cause you have that segmenting thing nailed!!!
Favorite would be the the antler, with the cone on the right as a very close second! Wonderful stuff!!!!

Thanks Scott!
I have to admit that I had to go research the Vietnam Service Ribbon pens. Found some on IAP and of all things a Facebook result came up for Woodturningz. Interesting. They used actual ribbons or acrylic to make the pens, but I have Yellowheart and Bloodwood that would work if I could just find something green - I had some Lignum Vitae that might work but I think it is not dark enough green. Might have to use some dye to get the green color.
