These are fun, simple to do, and put all those little chunks of wood I never want to send to the dump, to a better use. They are essentially small bottle stoppers in terms of how they're made. But instead of the stopper, you drill a 1/2" X 1/8" counterbore, in which you epoxy a rare earth magnet after finishing. And they'll hold anything you'd like on that singular vertical catch-all surface we all have standing in at least one room of our houses. Woods are African Blackwood, Cherry, Madrone Burl, and Garry Oak. The batch in the first pic are wipe-on poly finished, Beal buffed and waxed. The second batch are Walnut Oil finished, Beal buffed and waxed. Thanks for lookin', Mark

Very cool Mark. I love the use of those odd sized pieces that invariably end up in a box under a cabinet just waiting for something to be used for. I can't throw them out either and now I have another use for them.
Those all turned out great! I think I like that Oak one the best - that has some great character!

Cool idea!
As others have said, I too don't throw out those little pieces of wood. But with pen blanks, I don't end up with pieces that large... Guess I could do some glue ups, and turn them into segmented, multi-colored magnets?
My favorite has to be the odd shaped one at the very bottom of the second photo! And the middle one in the upper photo! Probably because they stand out from the typical round ones(but those are eye-catching too!!)

Cool idea, Mark and the rare earth magnets should hold better than the regular fridge magnet. Every time I open the refrigerator door, a picture or adrawing or a graded paper with a smiley face falls off.
