Hard and smelly while turning but finishes quite nice. No idea on the wood type. Makes my RAS wish I cut it on the TS or BS! ;D

Interesting material... and it's no wonder it smelled bad - it SHOULD. Phenolic is dang toxic stuff - phenol and formaldehyde.

Nice looking pen Beeze. I'm wondering what the deal is with phenolic impregnating wood. Is that just another way to stabilize weak wood? I have not heard of it before.

Part of a switch from a BIG power transformer about 20 yrs. old (I think), it comes as a 4'x 1/12" rod and is tough on a saw blade. The guy that gave it to me works for the company that rebuilds the transformers. I'm going to see how many I can get! ;D Thanks Boodrow, that is my default shape for slimline pens.
