So.... I'm not really sure what I want to work on next.
Honestly? I'd really like to do some type of shelves or small TV stand. I have a black veneered particle board TV stand from Walmart. It's in good shape, but come on - seriously, I can fart out a nicer looking stand than that lol. Just using real wood would be an improvement. I'm really not sure on the design though.... I don't want it to be huge - it needs to be a flat top because a small flat panel TV will sit on it. It needs to have two open shelves so that I don't have to have a door open to operate the DVD player or PS3 (plus the PS3 gets smokin' hot and needs lots of air to circulate.) I would say a total open stand would be fine but it's such a dust trap that way. Hmmm....
The other thing - I could go for a nice small set of bookshelves. Just something simple, well built, good finish.
Cherry or Walnut is what I'm thinking for the TV stand. Cherry or Oak I'm thinking for the bookshelves.
Anyone have ideas or pictures of things that they've done that they'd like to share?
Thanks, Zac

Zac, Probably a little longer than your looking for, and made from some of that free MDF I got. Made this for my neighbor. Nothin' special, Just thought you would like to see.

Actually - I can't remember who made it, but someone made an awesome looking set of cases/shelves with colums and everything, even coved out grooves that was painted and just looked great. All made out of MDF...
That's a nice project there, but a little larger than I'm thinking. What did you use to fasten it all together. Dados I'd guess, but what else.

black veneered particleboard TV stand from walmart... ... lol, I think we have the same craptacular furniture under our TV's!
if you were electrically inclined, you could wire up fans that are used for computer modding to the back/sides of a relatively closed in setup, and get the air circulation, but thats probably about the most difficult way to solve that problem, to be realistic. but it'd be an option. (it'd actually be quite easy to think of it, a 12v DC adapter and toggle switch from ratshack, a few wires, a little soldering and shrink tubing... bam, should work. you can get such fans online relatively cheap) dunno how the noise would be, or how much airflow you'd really need. you'd probably be able to get enough airflow to keep the hardware cool, with two pretty quiet 80-90mm fans, one on each side of the cabinet, and I'd guess that one adapter could power both...
flat panel TV's and monitors are pretty freaking light, so strength wise wouldn't probably be a big problem.
got no plans ideas or anything for you. once upon a time my dad built a very practical, but rather ugly thing once to go on top of a big dresser cabinet thing we had the TV on top of at the time. ... out of particleboard. it was really stout, just a big rectangular box closed on 3 sides, with two dividers in the middle. it was strong enough to hold a rather large CRT TV.
so yeah, not much help here, except for my excessively complex heat solution.

Have you worked in MDF much Zac? No offense to the other posters but I will probably be avoiding it from now on. I made a shelf for my son's toys and it's been through two moves already, it's looking pretty bad. It's strong but the edges don't quite hold up to much.

Just throwing this one out there, Zac. There's small shelves on each end (for CD's and games) and more shelves in the middle (big enough for other components), all adjustable. I put some big holes in the back for ventilation. I'm pretty sure I got the whole thing out of one sheet of plywood. Might look pretty sharp in cherry(?)....molded trim, top & bottom...a couple fluted columns on the front, glass doors.... I can getcha better pics and dimensions if yer interested. I scored hundreds of board feet of the stuff. Lex you are correct, it's not the ideal material. But when it's free. You improvise. Here is a pic of the other bkcs. I used 1 1/2" drywal screws, countersunk then filled and sanded. If you pre drill a pilot hole they seem to grab real nice. Gotta be too careful though on the edges, pretty soft in that area. It chestnut stain...no paint.
