I have a guy wanting me to make him a couple doors to match what he already has. This is what I know about 'em... They're about 50 years old (house was built in the 60's) They're 3/8 inset with a small roundover on the outside. This is what I think... It looks like thin maple veneer, vertical grain (inside & out) Then inside of that, some thicker (1/16+-) veneer (horizontal grain)inside & out. Then, the center is solid wood, 9/16 thick X various widths (2"-4"), glued up. Here's a couple pics. With so much happening on the edges, I'm not sure I want to use plywood....ugly edges. I'm not sure I would trust veneering a glued up panel (like the existing)....wood movement. Can I trust a simple glued up panel to stay flat enough for a door (30" X 19")? I'm open for suggestions. Pics are a little confusing......This door came from over their fridge. It opens from the bottom, up, so the hinges are on TOP of the door.

I'd say what you have is a piece of lumber core plywood. Lots of it used in my area in cabinets built on site by the trim carpenter. You probably won't find it at a big box store but can have it special ordered.

From the picture it may not be lumber core ply as lumber core solid wood sections are fairly narrow, like 2". It may have been a glue up with a door skin as the veneer. You could use a plywood panel and edge it with solid wood wide enough to get the edge detail. That will stay flatter than a glued up panel, IMO.

Yeah, I would probably make them out of lumber core plywood if it was available. Otherwise I would make them out of MDF core ply and glaze the edges. That's all assuming the client wouldn't want to pay me to veneer up my own panels to match the ones he already has perfectly.
