I've got a few pieces of mystery wood (typical, I'm a novice at species IDing). The pieces a 2" wide, 10" long, and 3/8" thick. I've just about figured out what they are. Spruce most likely.
I want to use dovetails on them. Handcut since I haven't a router (nor really want one, but that's a new topic someday when I feel both brave and belligerent).
What sort of spacing would suit this size piece? I thought of just one dovetail right smack in the middle, but that seems a bit clunky, but three or four on such a narrow piece, that seems busy.
Any ideas? I normally place 4 pins on a 6" wide board, 4 on a 2" piece seems busy.
I could use some intelligent thought on the matter.
Thanks, TJ.

2" wide? i'd prolly make 'em 1/2" at the fat end and about 1/8" apart - adjusting for the half-pins on each side. You could also do fatties of about 3/4" spaced the same distance, that looks nice, too. The angle should be about 1 in 6 or 13-14 degrees for spruce - it's a fairly soft wood.

On my little screw boxes, they are close to 2" H...
I have 2 full Tails centered with 1/2 at top & 1/2 at bottom. I think they look pretty good... material was closer to 1/2" ply.
One thing about laying out DT's, that you're going to hand cut... you can make them ANY WAY YOU LIKE...
Play around with it on paper to see what you like...
You should have 1/2 tails at top & bottom... split up the center as you like... I'd put no less than 2 Full Tails in the center...
Oh, practice a little on scrap first... ... at least to get 'warmed' up... ;D ;D

How's about a little pictorial representation of some DTs on a 2" wide board? Pretty self explanatory. Didn't do more than 3 as it is starting to get a little busy, but I like 3 the best.

That's a lot clearer Jerry. I don't know why, but with stuff like dovetails, I have a hard time seeing them in my head and figuring out which ways is best. I need to spend more time on SketchUp to picture these blasted things.

I used a Dovetail plug in available here to draw those up pretty quickly. There's some pretty good instructions for using it at FWW. The instructions are by a fella named Dave Richards who really knows his SketchUp stuff.

I don't use it enough for all of it to SINK IN... He can be found on Lumberjocks.com .
