This one I roughed out a couple of weeks ago...from that Walnut stump I got a couple years back. It's 8 3/4" x 3 3/4", with a slanted, flared rim. Sanded to 600 grit and finish is one coat of Minwax AO. There is some great figure in this bowl. it looks more like Wenge than Walnut. Sorry for the poor pics. I just haven't had time to work on the photography set-up.

I like this bowl too. The figure in this blank is a+, I also think the crack/small holes on the bottom gives it character.
I also think your finish is great. I have been looking for something with a more natural finish that is somewhat durable. seems like a better finish on bowls vs. the super shiney poly route. this looks like it may be what I have been looking for. what do you think about the durability of this finish

Wow, that really does have some nice figure in it. In the pic showing the bottom, I see something that reminds me of Indian cliff dwellings like they have at Mesa Verde.
Cool bowl. I like the crack too.

what do you think about the durability of this finish I think it is more durable than Danish Oil but not even close to a straight poly finish. I like it because it only takes one or two coats to look great. I brush it on with a 1" chip brush, wait about 10 minutes and then buff/rub it in with a cotton cloth. It's a really soft shine that gets even better after a Beall buffing. It's great for display purposes. For a functional bowl that will get washed, I'd just use mineral oil. BTW, that crack is superficial...it's not very deep at all, that's why I didn't fix it with CA. Thanks for the comments.

Great looking bowl, Cody. But I wouldn't expect anything less from you. You turning guys have some sort of sickness don't you?.....lol. I guess that's what is meant by the "vortex"....lol

Yep, some new fangled medical type would call it Vertigo and want to prescribe some fancy drug for it. . . . . . . .

Oh, no! Not Vertigo. I have had that and wouldn't wish that on anyone. If someone has to have a sickness I guess there are worse sicknesses to have than wood turning....lol.

Hey Mike, you oughta try it. It's just like carving except you hold the gouge still and the wood moves. ;D
