This is Bois d' Arc with an undercut rim and Ebony accent. It's 7" diameter and 2 5/8" tall, one coat of Minwax Antique Oil. The Ebony was app. 3/16" thick in six segments glued on with West System epoxy colored with lamp black. I had some more pics but the box-o'-rocks didn't want to load them for some reason.

How precise is mounting the vessel blank on the lathe when you have a ring of dissimilar wood for the rim? I'd imagine a sixteenth off would make it look shoddy as could be.

outstanding, I love the ebony rim. Very slick touch. Do you have a circle temple you use to make the rim ? I like this one a lot. when you can, please add the other pics.

How precise is mounting the vessel blank on the lathe when you have a ring of dissimilar wood for the rim? I'd imagine a sixteenth off would make it look shoddy as could be. TJ, I followed the same procedure I use for most bowls...cut the blank round on the band saw, attach to a faceplate and mount on the lathe. Round the blank and cut a tenon on the bottom. Remove from the faceplate, reverse the blank and mount on the lathe with a scroll chuck. Here is where I differed from normal (for me). I hollowed the bowl, undercut the rim and even sanded the outside. Then, I cut a shallow recess exactly 6" in diameter into the rim for the Ebony accent pieces. Once that was done, I didn't remove the bowl from the chuck until I was ready to finish the bottom. It stayed in the chuck for 6 days before I could get back to it to glue in the Ebony pieces. Mike, for the Ebony pieces, I cut out some 1 1/4" wide pieces and marked the outside arc on them with a pencil caliper set at a 3" radius. I then eyeballed the width and marked the inside curve. I cut out the arcs on the bandsaw and sanded them smooth to fit by hand. The 30 degree angle on each end of the pieces I cut on the CMS saw. The black epoxy took care of any minor gaps. Thanks for the comments, guys.

Stunning!
The shot of the underside reminds me of pictures of Jupiter. That finish sure did well in one coat. Will you put any more, or any different, on over it?

Mark I'll three-wheel buff it sometime today and that will complete the finishing. I'm liking that Minwax AO more all the time. Thanks again for the comments, everybody.
