Highland Woodworking has the Rikon 12" mini-lathe on sale for $270, regularly $330. I got an e-mail flyer from them today.

And that's a fantastic lathe, too. A fellow ww club member has two and they're made REAL well. They blanchard ground the ways, even.

Nope, that there is not the VS but the 6 speed pully driven lathe.

I can attest to the quality of that machine. I own one, and it's been good to use. Customer support was great when the starting capacitor failed after only 6 weeks. Had a new motor complete within three days, and been fine since. Cast iron, blanchard-ground bed. 6 speed pulleys that are a cinch to change speeds with - not as slick as a VS, but easy.

Just a thought...
Couldn't a smart fella add a VS to it? Something along the lines of a knob-dimmer-type switch? Or would that hurt the motor?
Very good deal!!

If it has a DC motor (likely) you can add a rheostat to it, but that could causes premature failure of the motor. An electron speed control wouls be better, but why not just buy the VS model in the first place?
