so a little about myself...
I'm a 27 year old guy and engaged.
I grew up in scouts, and my dad had some degree of wood and metal shop when I was growing up, as did my grandfather. so between growing up around it, scouts, and shop classes in high school I'm at least basically familiar with most wood and metal shop power tools. I've never been very fond of Radial, Table or Circular saws. (my dad only ALMOST cut his finger off once with his radial saw when I was little,) just not as big on the noise and such. but if I had em I could use em.
Anyway, off on my own and all, I don't have much of any of that, but I've been researching the possibility of getting into some manual woodworking and its lead me to here. I'll let this be just an introduction and my other question(s) to its own thread.
hopefully I'll find some useful information and insight here!

We have a great Founder/Administrator here and a couple of very worthy moderators who keep things civil and on topic...mostly. There is also a dedicated hand tool forum where, not just the knuckledraggers, but a lot of us electron burners also post questions and get answers. We're glad to have you join us and hope that you will actively participate in the discussions. Hint: We like woodworking related pictures, too.

Welcome RiverWalker. A broader, deepr expanse of woodworking knowledge cannot be found anywhere else, and all with a general sense of humor and humility. You found a good place to ask your questions.

He's asking if you've been lathed yet. The "vortex" is what you fall into once you get a lathe. Some of us get sucked into the vortex and do almost nothing else besides turning. You can't see it (or can you?!?!?!) but I'm raising my hand. I've been lathed. <edit> Stretch must type faster than I do

oh, lol.
I've messed around a little with a wood lathe, yeah. thats one of the things my dad got when he inherited his dad's tools and such, and I used it a little, didnt' do anything real substantial but it was fun and I did make a lot of chips, and a useless, but pretty and smooth round thing here and there.
I can totally see getting sucked into that.
another book I have at the moment from the Library is "The Woodwright's Shop" and I admit its section on manually powered lathes is very intriguing....
