Gotta love that song, figured it was appropriate! I went back out to the lathe this evening, and I turned 2 pens!!! The hand didn't hurt too bad with the vibrations from the lathe. Using the pen mill and sanding them are a whore with the thumb still bandaged up, but I'm just glad to be able to woodwork again. Hopeing I didn't loose my touch, what do you think? The top is a sierra with some spalted pecan I found that I had from when I was cutting it and my finger up. The second pen is a mix of a couple of pen attempts that went south and I blew their partners up, so I decided to make a sort of red white and blue pen. Let me know what you think, Emerson

That Sierra with the spalted Pecan is a stunner. Very nice pen. The other one doesn't do much for me. Sorry. Glad to hear you are able to turn again and that you remember Gene Autry.

Thanks Cody,
Yeah, the 2nd one doesn't do much for me either, but I had to do something with the already turned blanks, lol. I figured it was worth a try. Someone gave me the kit for free, so really I don't have any $$ in it.
I found a place close to me that is a non profit gallery of local artists. It costs $15 per year to be able to sell stuff there, and a $12 a month fee. No comissions. I talked to them about putting a few pens in there, and they liked the idea, and thought that they might sell. I'm in podunk AR, so not sure how well but she said that they get quite a few people in from Little Rock to see all of the art work, so we'll see. I figure I'll take these and a few more up there and see what happens. Can't hurt.

Looks like you picked up right where you left off Emerson. I'm really glad to see you are turning again. That spalted Pecan is fantastic.
The slimline is another matter, but at least you made something useful. I made a couple of the color plated pens (red, green, blue) and the plating started coming off just from assembly, so I've stayed away from them since then.
Glad to see you back in the saddle!

Thanks Doug, Yeah, the slimline was just a rough try at something new, but who knows. You never know what different people want, LOL. I really like that spalted pecan, it looks really good.

The Spalted Pecan came out nicely!
The other.....eh, I dunno? Guess you could do like I did and hide it. Got a pen from two different woods that will never see the outside world...but like you, couldn't bring myself to 'file 13' it.
Gotta know...did you get any CA on the thumb?

I like the top one...the wood...the hardware...makes for a good looking, no nonsense pen.
The other one? Well...uhh...nice work.

Yeah Scott, "file 13" around here doesn't happen much, my wife calls that the packrat in me! Maybe that is why my garage usually looks the way it does, lol. I guess that pen will just get used by me.
I really love that spalted pecan. I have another piece of that wood that is probably one of the best looking pieces of wood I have ever seen. Just waiting on a great quality kit to put it on. Not going to put it on a crappy low end kit like I have. This piece of wood is spalted to the brink, and has all sorts of swirls and stuff in it. It came from the crotch of a pecan tree. Guess the crotch is one of the best places!, LMAO.
