There can't be a soul here that hates finishing as much as me. Oh my GAWD.... 60% of the time it takes me to complete a project is finishing. I HATE finishing. Did I say that already? I HATE finishing. I manage to not screw up a project, then I have a last chance gasp to botch it all up with finish. It would be SO awesome if my wife would do the finishing...just let me do the woodworking. I don't even mind sanding. But the finishing... <gurgle> I'll never understand people who like to buy unfinished furniture. I'd make the furniture and pay somebody else to finish it.

I betcha that is exactly how that business got started.

What I hate about finishing is the little screw up that don't show up till you finish. Little scratches, glue spots, etc most of the time I try to ignore them.

I actually like finishing - watching the dry wood "come to life" as you start to unlock the beauty inside with your finishing, is quite satisfying.
But it also does take me forever to finish the finish, and there is always that butterfly in your gut saying "what if I totally screw this up?".

Since all I have to work with is pine, I bet I hate finishing more than you!

Hmmm - Rob, Sorry but is there anybody that hates finishing more than you do? You bet there is - but, it's not me. I rather like the finishing part. I think I do a pretty good job at it, and I enjoy it. Though, it can be a bit tedious sometimes.

One of the things I remember Dano saying one time long ago was that you should estimate taking almost as much time applying a fine finish as it took you to complete the project. It's why lots of folks like those oil finishes and such. They're quick and easy, though they require maintenance and don't offer much in the way of protection.

I'll never understand people who like to buy unfinished furniture. Those people use paint! Scott (finishings means to begin something else) B
