Nice work!! I like the deer antler holder a lot - cool idea that it can be sitting on a desk, or hung up as in the pictures. I like the box a lot - I've gone back and forth whether I would rather make some, or if it would just be worth it to buy them - I don't like the idea of importing anything I don't have to - but I also don't like the idea of making pen boxes lol.

Nice pen box. I have thought about doing some of those but it is still on my to do list. I really like Padauk but that dust sure does make a mess.

Thanks for the comments. Both were short nice weekend projects. I was basically looking for an excuse to use some "cheeto wood" I had. Sure is striking color when your done with it and its stained. I would love to do something a little bigger with the pieces I have of it. Just have to find something fitting. I also noticed in the picture more flame or flake or whatever you want to call it then I had noticed while working on the little pen box. I liked how the hinges I got went with the wood. They seemed to match up well. Used 2 sets of hinges though. The first set was too tight and the box didn't close perfectly. So as carefully as a I could I ripped them off and put on a new set in the same holes. The new set is perfect. Also managed to not dent up the piece pulling off the old and not have to drill new nail holes.
Yeah the orange dust doesn't wash as easily out of white t-shirts as usual sawdust does and a lot of cleanup afterwards on your bench and tools. I have not gotten into the pens very much. I just wanted this for myself at work and not to do a lot of. so for those of you that sell a good number of pens doing one box at a time it probably takes too much time to be worth it. But if I did 5 it would not have taken much more time. Just do it in stages. I planed the piece I had, resawed it, planed both sides again, created a router template, routed the indents, sanded, stained, and put hinges on. quite a bit of time for just one box considering the payback on price you could charge. But 5 or more you just do those steps only hit 5 pieces with the router and so on instead of just one. It would go almost as fast as 1. Be a nice option to saw you also had custom made pen boxes and allow you to get more creative with your wood choices and design on the boxes than you get buying pen boxes.
Been doing smaller stuff lately. Juggling 3 things at a time and not doing anything too big. If I can manage not to cut myself in 2 or hurt myself again. I am kind of at a point to start working on a bed for me and the beautiful misses and that will be a big project. Probably do that over the summer when i have time. I have so much less of it in the summer and its hard for me to do things over a month or more period. I like to dedicate a lot of time usually. So this bed that might take me 2-3 weeks in the winter might be a 2-3 month thing in the summer. Formulating plans right now. I have some curly maple that would look pretty cool in the headboard.

Forgot to ask in the post I put in above....
What did you use to 'hollow' out the area the pen is laying in? Router with template guide?
What kind of hinges did you use? They look pretty stylish.....

For the hollow area - router with a template guide i had cut on my scrolling saw. Bit was a round end bit. A good site for bits is cripedistributing.com by the way. I buy only half inch shank yellow end ones on there. Very good prices and the bits have held up well for me. I make these router templates and save them away for the next time I needed them. Have a collection of them now as I am sure many of you do as well. A couple of them I have used 10 times each but often its just for one use but you still have to save them because you never know. Usually for a bigger piece when I have excess I screw them into the wood and cut away the excess. Or use 2 sided carpet tape if its a smaller piece like this that I don't have excess waste wood around.
The hinges I saved big money at menards. They were 2.50 for a set. I thought they looked classy and with the nails it would look a little better on such a small piece than screws. Though screws would have been much easier to remove than nails when I had to redo the hinges. The hinges do look and work a lot better than my original attempt that I took these pictures of. Live and learn on your mistakes I guess.
My 4 year old sings the save big money at menards theme song to people as we walk around the store. Its no surprise why my friends that are single ask to borrow him to pick up women. He also sings the subway 5 dollar footlong song when we go to subway. Believe it or not he is not just in front of the tv all the time and he is actually outside a lot. He also keeps asking to see the owie on my leg. Then runs away and hides behind mom and says its scary. Then wants to see it 10 minutes later. Mom told him see that is what happens when you don't ask for help or try to do something dangerous you should not. Basically she said - that is what happens when you do dumb things I guess. I didn't argue with her when she told him that.
