I had a pile of Hackberry that I went through yesterday. I cut up some of the logs into bowl blanks and hauled the rotten stuff off to burn. Today I sawed up one of the "centers" that I cut out of the logs and got 8 really pretty 3/4" x 3 1/2" x 14" slabs like the one pictured below. They are very firm and I intend to cut them into pen blanks and ship to whomever wants them. (I didn't do the pen blank swap because I rarely turn pens and I have so much wood already). Boodrow gets some because a lot of the wood came from him and I promised Trip some wood to tinker with. The rest is first come first served. If you want some and haven't sent me your mailing address, then PM it to me. Question: Will a 5" blank fit into a small flat-rate box? Is 5" long enough for pen blanks?

I have more wood than I know what to do with, but I don't have any Hackberry. If you still have some left I'd love some Cody. 5" is usually more than enough for pens. That is the size I usually cut my pen blanks even though 4.5" is usually plenty. Most pen barrels are about 2" long or slightly longer. Could I ask that you not cut the slab into pen blanks? Usually they get cut to 3/4" and that is way more than is needed for a slimline. For slims I cut blanks at 5/8" square and, when necessary, even a little less - if you are very, very careful a 1/2" square is enough to get a slim out of, though I don't particularly like to have to be that careful

Wow! The Spalted Hackberry came in the mail today and the pic does not do it justice. Man that is some kind of nice wood Cody! The spalting is just amazing.
I'm going to have to come up with something special to make with this wood. I'd better get busy and finish that flatwork project I have going now, so I can turn some of this great looking stuff.
Thanks Cody!
