Thanks to Boodrow who sent me some light pull kits to try out. I just got them today and had to make one even though it made for a long day. Shown here with a bottle stopper for perspective.

That sure is lovely. Funny how much something like pickguard can really set it at a whole 'nother level.
Nice!

Thanks for the comments guys. I was real unhappy with the bottle stopper and would not have posted a pic of it except to show the comparison with the size of the light pull and that is the last stopper I finished. Boodrow, the light pull probably took me about 3 hours to do But since it was my first I had to check on your helpful hints several times during the process (thanks for all your help). So hopefully the next one will be much quicker. Adding pick guard always takes longer to do too, so that slowed it down. Turning the cone was somewhat quicker than a stopper just because there was not as many voids to fill in and wait on. Still a very tedious process compared to wood turnings though And you had me plenty worried about breaking the mandrel so I was being very gentle What price range to you get for your light pulls? I have no idea where to start for these. I really like them, but not sure they are going to be worth what I want to charge for a Pine cone one. I like the idea of having them in my display - they are going to be real eye catchers I think. How do you display them? Hanging from something or laying down? I'm thinking about some kind of "tree" to display them from. Thanks again for your help with this Boodrow - I really appreciate it.

I like 'em.
But then anything you guys make out of those pine cones looks sharp.
Okay...splain "pickguard" to me.

Dave, pick guard is a hard plastic that is normally used to protect a guitar below the strings so that the pick does not damage the wood. Thus "pick guard". It comes in several combinations of colors and multiple ply too. I really like using it for accents and for separating different woods.
I use 2 kinds primarily, both of which are 3 ply - if the wood is dark I'll put a white/black/white 3 ply pic guard piece next to it, if it is light wood or antler I'll use the black/white/black pic guard. I sometimes use a solid yellow or a solid white. I wish I had a solid black but I have not been able to find it.
Using pick guard just dresses up a turning, whether a pen or a stopper or a light pull.

Doug I hear ya on the 3 hours , my biggest prob was I didnt make it small enough on the band saw. I had prob around 3 hours in mine. Price , well since I can make one in bout 20 minutes I get 12 dollars for the plan ones , 10 to friends. The pine cone one im goin to get 20 apiece for 4 of um , allready got the order. I think the next one will alot quicker. How did ur LOML like it? I have to honestly say The only thing my wife has ever liked that I turned was to dinner bells. Ur welcome on the help , If u run ur tail stock in on it with a spacer that wont damage the cone u can put some pressure on it , when u remove the tail stock is when u got to be real real careful, I dont know how many I broke , but it was a bunch. One other thing , The best way to turn regular wood into a pull , is buy 1" stock from ur supplier. Put it on the lathe and turn the whole stock round. Then cut to length what u put on the lathe. The pic I sent u showed one that I had preped , only natty lite made me cut it to short. With turnin it round for u put it on the mandrel helps the mandrel from takin a beatin with the square shoulders. They are good sellers , At the last show me and Cody did im pretty sure I sold more of those than stoppers , along with a few pens. I will post a pic hear in a lil while on how I display um , its very primative , but if u dont hang um people cant see um and know what they are. Now my ole arse is draggin , ruff day at work , was audited all day. Will have to see what the report says , but the auditer hit me on 2 violations , Not signin and datin a document, and security of the stockroom. Boodrow

This cone was so small that I did not cut it on the Band Saw first and just took the skin off the cone on the lathe - it worked pretty well that way, but probably took a lot more CA glue because I had to stabilize it a bunch of times. I used the tail stock with a cup live center to keep from breaking the mandrel, but it was a little worrisome when I removed the tail stock to round off the end. You can tell that it is not very sturdy without the tail stock. I ordered a mandrel from CSUSA but they are back ordered right now. Hopefully I won't break the one you sent me before they come in The pull kits are back ordered too until May. You must have cleaned them out Boodrow ;D Good luck with the audit...sounds like a real PITA.

Doug here is the etex redneck version of a fan pull display. Also for those that havent turned any yet a piece of zebra wood turned , sanded and ready to finish the main body. This is the point I pull the tail stock away and work real carefull on the end. I finished this piece and was usin ca glue to put the stud in the wood , I accidently spilled ca on the finish. So tomorrow I will resand and finish again, What few pulls I have ready at this time are at work , so I couldnt tie one on the display to let u know what it looks like , im done for the day. Hope this helps Boodrow

Thanks Boodrow. That East TX light pull display stand looks like a great way to show the pulls. But it would take up too much space on my table ...I might have to go with something a little more sophisticated like a dead branch ;D LOL. Vets call those "neuticals" - replacements for a neutered dog ;D Rocky Mountain Oysters are a lot bigger than those little East TX huevos

Hey Doug, Going off your other display, what about making something that's tall with a flat round top. Kind of like a pedastal on a lazy susan. put hooks under the table or rods out the side to hang the light pulls from. Kind of like a circular jewerly holder. The customer can spin it around to see the different ones and you can make the display out of turned wood again. I may have to sketch this up and send it too ya.

Thanks Trevor and Mav!
Trevor, I was kinda serious about using a tree branch, but if you send me a Sketch up of something I will seriously take a look at it. The lazy susan part really appeals to me after seeing how people liked being able to do that with the stoppers. I just gotta keep the footprint small cause I'm running out of room on the display table - I'm thinking I'll only have 5 - 10 light pulls in the display. But I do want to get them up off the table where folks will be able to see them.
Thanks again for the input...much appreciated.
