I got a great deal on a Performax 22-44 drum sander a couple of weeks ago and wasn't happy with the plastic dust shroud, which had only a 2.5" dust port and only laid there, so that the weight of the vac hose could pull it down into the sanding drum (in fact the plastic shroud is well sanded). I first tried to make a replacement out of 6" PVC, but it wasn't pliable enough to slide in and out of the sander ... so I picked up a two foot piece of snap-together duct at the hardware store, shaped it by clamping it to the edge of my workbench. I shaped a scrap piece of 4" PVC pipe and riveted it to the shroud, then tapped the tabs on the sander so that the shroud could be attached with thumbscrews. I'm pretty happy with how it came out, and I think it's a real improvement over the original. Maybe I should have painted it up all pretty, but I'm more interested in function than in fancy.
