Question - my lathe is advertised as 10 speed 600-2400 rpm.... It is the VS lever kind of adjustment.
It has never from day one been able to go clear down to 600, always a bit faster - and has always been able to get to 3000 rpm (if the readout is correct)
Now it only goes down to 800 but will go as high as 3200 I think....that I with a finished stopper spinning.
the belt had worn a fair amount and I have spares on order - would a worn belt cause this??
Thanks, Zac

Hi Zac, yea a worn belt will cause that. I got a belt at advance auto and it sure helped when mine was doing the same thing. I think the belt cost about three dollars, I took the old one in. Grizzly sent me a new one, it is still in a drawer. Mine will go below 600 by forcing it all the way to the left.

If you have the same model as I do, a G0462, do not place too much faith into the actual speed. My readout was way off, due to the magnetic inductor being loose on the spindle shaft. It has a metric hex screw on it, and it comes loose over time. I had to use red Thread locker to get the set screw to stay where it was supposed to be in the first place.
As a side note, I bought 1 replacement belt from Grizzly, and found a much better replacement thru McMaster Carr.
If you need the number, I can look it up for you.

Thanks TF - I have a couple belts on order from a local place.
The lathe was acting kinda funky today so I pulled the safety switch (lathe was already off) and took the guard off. I squirted oil in the little ball thing at the end of the spindle...oil port? I oiled it quite a bit, it actually was dripping out the other end - seemed like it took quite a bit of oil. Afterwords the lathe seemed to be able to go down to 'round 580 and max at 2400 - just like it's supposed to. Hmmm??
Hey TF - you ever experience the VS lever turning kind of hard? Like harder than in the beginning? If so - what did you do?
Zac

When I rebuilt the headstock, I lubed the plates between the lever & the detent ring behind it with axle grease. It could be just the belt going on you making that problem as well.
