Zac,
I absolutely love my G3, but at the price they've posted for the Barracuda2, you couldn't go wrong there. Both very well made chucks from what I've read. Better hope you like bling in your shop though . . LOL

I have the Barracuda 2 (though not the shiny version), and I really like it. I also have a set of the flat jaws (though I think I have the larger version), and they work well. The only annoying thing is having to unscrew all 8 screws to change from one of the 'normal' sets of jaws to the flat ones, but unless you've got 2 chucks (which I'm seriously considering), there's no real way around that. Having a case to keep everything in is nice, too.

Well I'm thinking about getting two chucks - but one "set" of everything. A turner that I talk to locally said he uses the cole jaws all the time for turning off the tenon end of bowls and the like - and everything I've seen or read indicated that if you can at all afford two chucks - you'll really be glad you have them because it's a PITA to always be switching the jaws. I just listed these two because I know they were on "special" - I'd easily be up to your suggestions of a good set to start out with. Question - If I bought the Nova set (just as an example) but later wanted to buy a second chuck to put the cole jaws on or something - would it have to be a Nova or "Nova compatible"? Would any chuck work? (Oneway, Barracuda, etc...??) I think Cjr does have that bling bling chuck! I remember when he got it, I was real new around the other board and was thinking "something's not right about him" hehe - I'm kidding! Zac

Chuck jaws are all a little different from each other - there's no standardization across brands, and usually not even across models of the same brand. There are a few exceptions - certain OneWay chucks have interswappable jaws, certain TeknaTool chucks likewise have interswappable jaws, but I'm not aware of any brand that's compatible with any other brand. Best bet is to choose a chuck brand & model and buy two identical bodies (or at least two bodies that're documented to be compatible with each other - like one with a key closer and one with a Tommy-bar closer) so you know for sure that the one set of jaws will fit the second chuck.

second what Tim said - find one brand you like and stick with em... i have a Supernova and a G3. the G3 can be a little overmatched if you max out your lathe's capacity. i think they say 12" max with a G3 and up to 16 or so witha supernova. depending ont he package, the super might only be a few pennies more than the g3. and the novas are excellent tools with a million accessories... just more mud for your puddle john

Like Boodrow, I prefer the Talon chuck but of the two you listed, I'd personally go with the G-3 just because of the reliability that Technatool has demonstrated over the years. That bling-bling chuck is way too flashy for me too watch spinning around all day. The G-3 is listed as being good for lathes with a 14" swing and the other Nova chuck accessories are supposed to fit it...although the larger ones aren't recommended.

I have a 16" swing but as long as I'm not going more than 14" I'd be alright wouldn't I?
I think woodcraft has additional chuck-only sales - I think 75 bucks maybe.
So....225 could get me really going on bowls..... I may end up with a talon one day, but may start a bit smaller at first.
Thanks!!

I quite like the Supernova2 that I bought...comes with the insert nut, if you order from the right place...
KMS tools in Canada usually has them on sale...
I also have an old Oneway scroll chuck that I got from my uncle - not sure if I really need two...haven't used the Oneway yet...

Old "Sonny Edmunds" sold me on the Super Nova a few years ago and I've been extremely happy with it. It's very solid and smooth to operate. The handle is comfortable and easy to use one handed. I also like the fact that you can get spare jaws at woodcraft when needed instead of ordering them. I like the idea of two chucks and will pick another one up here shortly. The Super Nova goes on sale all the time at WC.
