Here are the pics of the old champion drill press found in a farmshop in Louisiana. Gearbox for quick speed change. Homemade motor mount. 240 volt motor with Allen Bradley start stop button.

That's a neat machine. I like the vehicle transmission, variable speed and reverse.

That's pretty cool. Is that an old model A transmission or something?

I don't think it could be - I think the Model A was still pedal-shift, but I'm not positive. They may have graduated from chain drive by that point, but again I'm not sure. That's a fairly modern transmission, no more than maybe fifty or sixty years old, I think. Sure makes for a neat ol' machine!

I don't remember my Aunt's '27 A being a planatary gear transmission. (A Pedal Shifter) I sort of remember a three on the floor with that big honking shifter. But it has been a LONG LONG time ago.

Yeah, that's gotta' be at least a 75-pound Wilton there! Whatever they did, it was HEAVY WORK.

Someone sure went to a lot of effort to get rid of the overhead power shaft didn't he? I had never seen a overhead belt driven drill press before but that certainly was one, once upon a time.

Dave, Hadn't thought about it that way. You have a sharp eye.
Thinking about it in depth... The person who converted the drill press from over head belt driven to electric motor probably used what they had available. Maybe it was a kludge but the final cost was probably nil.

I know the person who did that. The very farmer who allowed me to take the pictures. We've become friends. I've brought him some home made egg rolls and we've cooked steaks in his kitchen. Those steaks from his prize calf were awesome. The final cost was nil. He got the motor from a junk pile, same with the Allen Bradley start/stop button.

Without a closer look to be sure... I think I've got a start button dangnear identical to that'n on my ol' F-B planer. They work WELL, even after a whole mess a' years!
