Is that ebony on the outside? What's the inner wood?
Great looking frames - and great looking kids!
Yeah, sometimes those "weekend" projects in magazines are a wee bit overzealous.
Also - I want to give you a kudos on the three sets matching great. It's one thing to make three sets, but to make three matching sets - that is another.
Nice work - thanks for sharing!

Oh yeah....those are sharp. Not just your run of the mill picture frames. The kids look like they're proud to be in there, too.

Hey, those are really NICE!
I'll have to look'em up... what issue are they in?

The outside wood is actually red oak with a mahogany colored gel stain and polyacrilic finish. The inside wood is tiger maple with a lot of coats of danish oil.
I did the staining and finishing on the outside trim pieces when it was a long stick, then cut the groove with a dado blade and cut the lengths with mitered corners needed to fit to the inner frame. I also prefinished the inside frame, but left the oil off the outside edge to have a glue surface available.
Throughout the entire project I cut and assembled each piece for each frame so I didn't have to repeat the setup later. That was the key to making them all the same.
I'll check the issue number tonight. It was sometime in the fall.
Thanks for the comments.
