I cut up some chunks of Poison Sumac last fall, hoping it would make a nice pen. I finally turned one this evening and was mostly disappointed. The Sumac is a pithy stem and very light. I had hoped to reveal some pretty grain near the center but there was none. The color turned sort of yellow-green and while it wasn't ugly, it was sort of plain. Couple the plain wood with poor fitting and a poor finish and the results weren't very good. Here's the pen, a PK Mont from PSI that I had in my box of pen turning stuff.

When you cut the blank in the chunk-o-wood, did you cut it at an angle to bring out more grain?
The wood is very light, so it's hard to see any grain in the photo. I see a few dark spots in the second photo. The light wood does go with the hardware though....makes it jump some what!
I think the wood would look very good with a pick guard/bloodwood/pick guard in both sections.....JMHO.

Boo, that ain't Ivy, it's Sumac. The berries that it produces in the fall are what's poisonous. AFAIK, there's nothing poisonous about the leaves/stem.

It's good to see you turning something again Cody. I was starting to think you forgot all about you lathe, with all the rocking chairs and boxes and other flatwork you have been doing. Welcome back to the dark side Too bad the wood did not turn out the way you hoped, but that is the way it is sometimes - something looks interesting and turns out to be less than you had hoped for. Still, it is a nice looking pen.

There are a number of Sumac's just make sure you don't get ahold of the wrong one, they have an oil(similar to carbolic acid) in the stem, pulp and leaves that can cause a severe rash in some folks, not worth playing with if you don't know what your reaction may be.Black Walnut saw dust doesn't kill all horses but it kills some, so I'm told

Evidently I'm not allergic to the East Texas variety. I've been in the thickets and handled them all my life with no adverse reaction...same thing with poison ivy, it's never bothered me.
Just lucky, I guess.

That does happen Cody,,I remember as a kid I used to lay in poison ivy on an earthen bridge and fish, never got it in fact I oft times would squeeze the oil onto my skin being a tuff guy to the other boys. One day I was helping my father cleanout a fence row that was full of ivy.We were burning it.I got downwind of it and got covered with a heavy cloud of smoke, now if I look at PI, I get itBTW that smoke didn't care where you had it either kinda embarassing when you started scratching but you just had to do it no matter where you were,,,,,,,sure am glad I was to young to date ;D ;D ;D

Just lucky, I guess. I think I am the same way. I have camped and hunted and know I have been in the stuff. My brother in law and I would go hunting and both would be in the same places and he would come down with it but I wouldn't. I don't know if I was just extremely lucky or what but I never came down with PI. All the BIL has to do is look at it and he comes down with it. I am not going to go out and find any to wallow in just in case it was luck.... ;D

hey boodrow, I think I would rather someone kick the crap out me than have a leg full of itchy, burning oozing chit that you cant get rid of. well I guess 2 leg fulls of that would be worse.
Call the doc, next time. a friend of mine gets it bad every year. last year he got in all in his eyes and they completely closed untill he got a steroid pack from his dr. cleared it up in 2 days flat.
