I hit one of the local antique group shops yesterday; I was in the area and wasn't pressed for time. I had to make an early departure, unfortunately, because a certain small somebody wasn't heeding my warnings about leaving the store should that somebody not look only with their eyes. <ahem> However, I did see some interesting things. I saw two Stanley planes in reasonable shape for $25 each: a #3 and a #5. There was a #4 1/2...I don't recall how much they were asking, but I don't usually see #4 1/2's, particularly ones in decent shape. I also saw a #81 scraper in workable shape (I think they were asking $85 for it). I also saw a #148 match plane that was missing parts, but I think that's the first #148 I've seen in a local antique store. All in all...I didn't need any of them, so I didn't pick any of them up. If I had a lot of spare cash hanging around, that #81 was sure temping though.

I think they were overly fond of the #81, but that may be something of a collector item. You don't see near as many of those as you do the #80 which they made for a lot more years. As a working plane, I prefer the #80.
I also prefer the #48 to the #148, but that's just me.
If the 4.5 was priced similarly to the other two bench planes, that may have been a good buy. The extra width makes them nice as smoothers.
