Hello to everyone,
I'm new to wood turning, and have done about 6 pens and pencils so far, a well as a "vase" and a couple of toothpick holders. I'd have done a lot more pens, but I like to blow them up on the lathe it seems. ;D I'm a high school science teacher in Arkansas by trade, as well as hunt, fish, trap, do skull cleaning and wood turning on the side. It seems as if I am busier away from work than at work sometimes. Anyway, I'm glad to be here, thanks to sdb777 for letting me know about the site.
Hope to talk with ya'll in the future.
God bless,
Emerson

I was lonely and needed some support here in Arkansas. Noticed this great guy of at IAP, and we have a lot of hobbies in common!
Seemed only natural to let him know about this forum!!

Welcome Emerson, the crowd here are very adept at making a newcomer feel right at home very quickly. Been hangin' out with these guys for about a year, and their acceptance and comaraderie towards me make me feel like I know each of them personally as old college buddies.

Thanks for the warm welcome!
Beamer, I'm not sure about Mr. Lake, or Mr. Palmer, but I figure Mr. Phidipaldi probably already beat me here with Mr. Drive, LOL.
I am new to all this turning stuff, but hopefully in time, and with help from others, I'll be helping out others, if at least telling them all my mistakes!

Well, Mr. Palmer has been here since the start. ;D
I do gotta ask, though, what is "skull cleaning"?

Well, skull cleaning is a hobby of mine that i have turned into a business as of lately. It is taking a skull and getting the flesh off of it for people and then whitening it. It is also called european mounting. People get it done as a cheaper alternative to having a deer head or some other game animal taxidermied. And some people just like it better as well. If I had pictures up on my website, I'd send you there, but my website is a work in progress right now, has all the info, just no pictures yet, so it wouldn't help out alot.

That's pretty much what I thought, but one can never be sure without asking.
Had a friend who did taxidermy on the side as well as spending tons of money going on domestic exotic animal hunts. Seems to me he could have actually gone to where the animals were native for what he paid to "hunt" them on exotic wildlife ranches.

Yeah, some of those hunts are pretty expensive. Some people don't agree with them either, with a ranch being high fenced. I see the benefits in them, I have a degree in fisheries and wildlife biology. Most people just see an animal in a "cage" being shot. They don't see that the "cage" is actually a 1000 acre ranch or bigger! Not to mention the best way to ever get an animal back from the brink of extinction is to put a hunting season on the animal! That might sound wierd, but the more of the species that can be hunted is better for the hunter, so they will dump funding into it to save the animal. The animal just has to be regulated correctly. Case in point, the oryx has a greater population on Texas game ranches than it does in the wild in Africa!
