Here I sit in my shop - listening to the radio, looking out the window, CNC maching running in the background. I just finished this winners plaque. A friend from work has an Annual Soup Off. They get together with their personal friends and cook soup. They judge the winner and the winner gets the spoon. This year my friend asked me to make a rudementary plaque for him. This is Cherry - with a little heard wood exposed on the side. I did the "V" groove title on a CNC router - as well as the "brass" plates. The brass plates are really plastic made specifically for this sort of stuff.

Leo,
After you cut the main title in the wood, how did you get it Black without bleeding into surrounding wood?
What did you fill it with (paint, epoxy, etc.)?
Looks very nice...
I guess it's for a year after year record of the various winners?
Thank you.

Joe,
Actually Sonny had some input it that story.
1) I sand the wood down to 220 grit 2) I spray 2 coats of spray shellac 3) I hand sand with 220 4) Tack rag 5) Apply paint mask 6) Rout letters 7) meticulously clean out with exacto knife 8) air blow 9) spray 2 coats of shellac 10) spray 2-3 coats of black spray paint 11) peal off the paint mast 12) sand with 220 on ROS 13) Spray piece with Satin Poly (3-4 coats)
The shellac seals the porres so the paint doesn't bleed. I have done a LOT of these thigs this way now.

Leo, makes sense...
What kind of Paint Mask & where do you get it?
Thank you...
I have some wood already routed... (out of the sequence)... Now what?

Paint mask is bought at a local sign supply store. It is readily available at lots of places that supply sign making materials. Craft stores don't have it and Borg doesn't have it. It looks like shelving contact paper - but it peals off easily, and is made to be routed through it. It's also not cheap. Do an internet search for sign making supplies in your area.
If you have already routed the letters -- spray with shellac, 2-3 coats. Paint the letters with a brush and some paint.
Let it dry really good.
ROS sand it until only the letters are exposed.

I don't like beans - even if they come from Bawstin
I do like Chowdah
I am not a participant in the soup off - I just made the plaque. If I was a participant - my soup would win every time.
