Gears were cut from Baltic Birtch plywood. After some fine tuning with the pallets got it run for 34 hrs before having to rewind. Relitive humidity seems to effect how long it will run before having to rewind. Got the plans from the Spring issue of ScrollSaw magazine. Designed by Marc Tovar. As always comments, questions or suggestions appreciated. Thanks for Looking.

Why was Baltic Birch ply used instead of say Hard Maple or some other very hard wood? I've seen kits, etc. for those... awesome... Those gears must be SO exact! Looks great! ;D ;D How big is it? Gear thickness? Thank you for showing!

The gears need to remain relatively dimensionally stable & flat - natural-grained wood will tend to warp pretty badly at thicknesses like those, while BB ply will tend to stay pretty flat.
EDIT: Also, the BB ply has about the same strength in all directions, & isn't prone to splitting under load...

That's a great project, Les. How many hours did you put into making it? I might be interested in trying one of those.
