How is this wood for turning? I have a small stash I got from a friend for pennies on the dollar. I heard it smells really good when turning. What does it smell like?

My sniffer is broke right now - but I don't remember any particular smell. Also - I wear a respirator when turning - but even when cutting blanks or drilling I don't remember a smell. Some of those Asian species are actually members of the "pine" family and you can totally tell, they look nothing like a pine, but they sure smell good! Amboyna Burl - pennies on the dollar? WOW! What a friend!!! Any big chunks bowls and stoppers - or just off cuts for pens? As with any Burl - you need to be careful turning, but it's definitely doable - you'll really enjoy the finished product, I love Amboyna Burl! Here is a picture of a pen gone bad - turned into a key chain. Made with Amboyna Burl from Woodturningz. Zac

I turned a stabilized piece into a pen a while back. did not notice a smell but it turned like other stabilized burl pieces. not sure what the non stabilized pieces turn like. I am a huge fan of it and glad to hear you scored some on the cheap.

I just got some pen blanks from him. The price to buy slabs of that stuff is way out of my reach.

I've never tried Amboyna burl, but have seen pics of pens made from it that look very nice.
Nice score on the wood TF! Can't wait to see how your pen turns out.
